Rajkumari Amrit Kaur’s full name was Rajkumari Bibiji Amrit Kaur. She was the daughter of Raja- Harnam Singh of the Kapurthala royal family. She received her higher education in England. After completing her education, she came in contact with Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Mahatma Gandhi. After that, she entered the freedom struggle of India. She became an ardent Gandhian. She actively took part in the Salt Satyagraha started by Gandhiji. She had been awarded the Rene Sand Memorial Award 🏅.

She was an activist and politician. Following her long-lasting association with the Indian Independence Movement, she was appointed the first Health Minister of India in 1947 and remained in office until 1957.

During her tenure, she ushered in several healthcare reforms in India🇮🇳and is widely remembered for her contributions to the sector and her advocacy of women’s rights. She was also a member of the Indian Constituent Assembly, the body that framed the Constitution of India.

In 1942, she participated in the Quit India Movement. She organized a number of dharnas and demonstrations in various parts of India and was brutally injured in lathi charges several times.

She was arrested and sent to Ambala prison for a month and put in solitary confinement. Rajkumari served as the Chairperson of the All India Women’s Education Fund Association. She was a member of the Executive Committee of Lady Irwin College in New Delhi.

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was an extraordinary 👩🏻‍🦰 woman who broke out of the comforts of her home, joining the league of torchbearers who fought for freedom and a better life for all Indians.
